Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to contest specific decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
